La Roux Cruise Through 'Uptight Downtown'

Wednesday, May 28, 2014

Trouble In Paradise is glistening even brighter with '80s neon promise as La Roux releases the proper first single from it, "Uptight Downtown". If you believed that the previously released "Let Me Down Gently" was a lush left-field return for Elly Jackson (it was one of those "buzz track" deals) then you'll be pleased to crank volume and swish your hips to the kinetic bass and slingshot synths that this electric youth pop trap provides. Clearly Jackson is going for a David Bowie/ABC/Rio-era Duran Duran bewitchment on this, but it does groove with originality in all the right places, and further makes a case that Trouble In Paradise will be the pop album to cop this year.
