La Roux 'Gently' Returns

Monday, May 12, 2014

Well hello there stranger.

Last week a spark of surprise erupted on Twitter when the quite dormant British synth poppers La Roux tweeted the cryptic line: "New things." Well, some 'things' are happening now as the duo have released "Let Me Down Gently", the first single off of their upcoming sophomore album, Trouble In Paradise and it is a near-six minute slow burn of synthesized melancholia that isn't shy about sounding like a blast from the past. Those hoping for the kinetic pop-funk akin to their previous hits like 2009's "Fascination" and "In For The Kill" will be taken aback at the insulated and hypnotic climb this song possess. Personally, I love the layering this track has as it begins real soft and then upticks towards the middle, and it's not too heavy on the effect as it yearns with an '80s nighttime New Romantic appeal. Also Elly Jackson's voice (which was always slightly screechy to me) seems to have matured as it goes for a sort of nuanced Lykke Li-ish tone as it pours all over this painstaking pop confessional wonderfully. Trouble In Paradise will be released July 8th, and you bet I'm looking forward to adjusting my ears to more synthesized landscapes of this ilk.
